I talk about Zakat with Azhar Aziz. Just a few notes here: the Muslim Aid USA Zakat policy Azhar and I discussed can be found here. The End-to-end zakat guide I discussed in the interview can be found here. I am glad they have committed to transparency and being bound by the Islamic Council of Europe Zakat guidelines. Muslim Aid USA has not yet reported anything zakat-specific, though they promise to do so by the fall. So far, nobody I have seen has done it yet among American Muslim charities.
Azhar and I discuss:
Gaza, what does it mean when American Muslim charities say they are “on the ground” there?
Extensive discussion of expenses and overhead in Zakat.
Why is this sector so competitive, even seemingly cutthroat?
We discuss fraud and unethical practices in the sector.
Why can’t we give zakat in cash to beneficiaries?
The benefits of international zakat giving.
There is a lot more here. Please feel free to share and comment. I hope it's a useful resource for people looking at options for international zakat.
